FE/EIT Industrial and Chemical Discipline Reviews

Fe/Eit Review for Industrial and Chemical Engineering
If you want to study for the Chemical Engineering EIT exam, beware of this book. Only 23 pages of this 200-page book are dedicated to the chemical engineering portion. In addition, the book claims to have 3 practice exams, but none of them are for chemical engineering. I was disappointed to find in place of the exam the following statement, "Our apologies! We have not yet developed a practice exam for the Chemical Engineering afternoon discipline exam..." I bought the book for the sample questions, which were extremely limited. Because the NCEES Study guide only provides half the number of problems on the test, I was hoping to find a resource with additional sample test questions, and was sorely disappointed by this book. The industrial engineering portion of this study guide appears to be much more complete. Happy studying.

FE/EIT Quick Prep/Sample Problems (With CD-ROM)
Published in Paperback by Great Lakes Press (15 January, 2000)
Author: Merle C. Potter
Average review score:

No preparation here--just a high price tag
This book is a real disappointment. It offers no discussion or preparatory materials for the FE exam, just a selection of problems from other books by the same publisher. The CDs appear to be repeats of the same problems in the book. No index at all. Many typos and error, starting with the table of contents and continuing on nearly every page. Hard to see how this would help anyone prepare for this exam, if you had any questions at all about the material. And if you don't have any questions, why bother to prepare, you know it already!

Haunted Pool
Published in Paperback by Shameless Hussy Pr (June, 1978)
Authors: George Sand, Frank H. Potter, and Alta
Average review score:

Classist, boring, and sentimental
First of all, this book is pretty classist. In the beginning George Sand says that poor people are unable to understand beauty and the higher things in life--then she says that writers should stop whining about the plight of the poor people, that they are happy just the way they are. Well, it seems to me that if learning is an important part in life and there are people who have never had the opportunity to be enriched by that, it isn't "whiny" to want to mitigate their situation---but there's George Sand for you. She never thinks things through.

Then, of course, since this is Sand, it is more mawkish and sentimental than even Chateaubriand. The story is simple enough, yet Sand would have us fall to our knees and weep with joy over it. And furthermore, it is incredibly dull and cliched. The plot is about two people in love who reciprocate each other's affection and get marrried. The characters are a handsome, sensitive widower and a delicate milkmaid. Somewhere along the line there's a magical pool that keeps them stuck in the woods long enough for the man to declare his love for the woman. There are no complex, philosophical meditations. There's not much more to it than that.

Oh, if you like elitist dilettante musings wrapped in the most tired commonplaces imaginable and disguised as beauty, then you'll like this book. But otherwise, stay far, far away from this book.

this is a WORKBOOK, not reading material!
This book is reading material- appears to be a workbook, maybe a companion book to a text somewhere? Anyhow, not worth purchasing unless this is what you want!

Mande Potters & Leatherworkers: Art and Heritage in West Africa
Published in Hardcover by Smithsonian Institution Press (May, 1998)
Author: Barbara E. Frank

Surprise
As a MENDE from West Africa, I was pleasantly surprised to find a book about my tribe.....until I realized that the author wrote MANDE instead of MENDE. I have tried in vain to find information on the MANDE tribe (as we are referred to by the author). I can't believe that in the author's quest, the name of the tribe is incorrect. I only hope it is my error!

My Drawing Journal for Harry Potter Fans

Waste of money
Interesting idea, but looks like it was done with relatively cheap clip art and no spell check. Practically every character's name is misspelled. True Potter fans will be annoyed, not delighted, with this journal.

Principles & Practice of Mechanical Engineering: The Most Efficient and Authoritative Review Book for the PE License Exam (2nd Ed)
Published in Hardcover by Great Lakes Press (August, 1997)
Authors: Merle C. Potter, Charles W. Radcliffe, Clark J. Radcliffe, Bassem H. Ramadan, Craig W. Somerton, David C. Wiggert, Keith Woodbury, and Great Lakes Press
Average review score:

Better study guides are available.
I purchased the guide to help me study for the PE. This book is divided into several chapters, each covering a different area of mechanical engineering. The chapters were written by various contributing authors. Although some of the chapters were helpful in my studies, overall I was very disappointed with the book. There are numerous errors in the formulas and example problems which can lead to a lot of time wasted on figuring out why your answer does not agree with theirs. For example, a good deal of the text from a chapter on kinematics and dynamics of machinery came from Norton's book Design of Machinery. However, the PE review author did not copy some of the equations correctly. Fortunately, I had both books so I could find the discrepancy with a minimum of wasted time.

Another disappointment was the chapter on control systems. Most of the chapters had several example problems so that you could see how to solve them. However, the control systems had only three problems, two of which were on how to find transfer functions. The information in the chapter was difficult to follow and instead I relied on my undergraduate books.

Also disappointing was that the answers to the problems from each chapter were in a separate book. The author claims that this was done so that you could bring the review book into the exam with you. However, to the best of my knowledge, in every state you are allowed to bring any material that you wish with you to the exam.

A better option for a review book would be Mechanical Engineering Reference Manual for the Pe Exam : For the Pe Exam by Michael R. Lindeburg. This title is available from Amazon.com.

No mater which book you choose, in the end you need to study pretty hard to pass this exam. Good luck with your studies.

The Year I Didn't Go to School
Published in Hardcover by Atheneum (01 September, 2002)
Author: Giselle Potter
Average review score:

Too many mistakes
I was so excited to see this book -- I've been teaching my children Italian, so it seemed perfect. I was very disappointed to see the many mistakes not only in Italian -- but also such elementary grammatical mistakes in English as "it's" instead of "its." The story itself is episodic, without much compelling action, sense of place or character. The book could have been set in Spain or West Virginia without much change to the story or illustrations.
